Prostheses (Dentures)

The prostheses are a replacement for the patient’s missing teeth. They are suppose to function and look as the original ones. its function are to help for speech, chewing and aesthetic.

Pain

When getting new prostheses , one must get used to function with it in ones  mouth. Usually it feels uncomfortable in the beginning and after couple of days of use, one can feel that it sits too tight at some places, creating pressure points.  With small and simple corrections, done by the dentist, those points can be removed and so is the pain they caused. One should never  file or try to fix the prostheses himself!  It is important to use the prostheses directly and eat with it. In case of pain one should visit the dentist.  If you decided nevertheless to take it out of your mouth, use it again at least half a day before  you visit your dentist. This is, in order to make those pressure points more visible to the dentist.

Cleaning Instructions

It is very important to clean the prostheses after every time you eat, at least by rinsing it with water. In addition, twice a day, one should  brush the prostheses with water and soap with a special brush for prostheses.  Besides soap, there are other materials one can find at drugstores for cleaning prostheses.

One should pay attention also to clean the mucous membranes in the mouth, on which the prostheses sit.  At least once a day, one should massage those membranes with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. This action prevents the development of inflammatory lesions.  

Check-up

It is recommended to visit your dentist at least once a year if you have full prostheses, in order to check adequately the mucous membranes of the mouth, and to prevent pain as a result of loose prostheses. This  recommendation is valid also if you have no complaints or problems.
